South Dakota Wines and Chocolate

The History Club’s February meeting begins at 5:45 PM on Tuesday, February 6th.   We will learn about the history of winemaking in South Dakota, sample some local wines and enjoy a variety of goodies dipped in a chocolate fountain. Our speaker, Denise DePaolo, is the co-author of South Dakota Wine: A Fruitful History. Denise will educate us about local fruit, settler’s early wine making traditions, the development of grapes that survive the SD climate. She can tell stories about SD wineries and answer questions about pairing wine with chocolate or other food. Please invite a friend or your spouse to join in this special event. The more the merrier! There will be an opportunity to purchase the book at a discounted price of $15.  We hope to see you at the meeting!…

January 9,2018 5:45pm General Meeting

Begin the new year with David Jal, former child soldier from the Khor Wakow region of Sudan, one of the “lost boys of Sudan.” Forced into the army at age 8, he was shot, then injured from a grenade. While receiving medical treatment, he lost contact with his family. Moving from one refugee camp to another trying to survive, David eventually immigrated to the U.S. at age 19, and has lived in Sioux Falls for 22 years. He speaks six languages, has earned his GED, a college degree from USD, got married, and works as a probation officer for Minnehaha County. With the money he earns, he has started a school project to educate children in his home region. Most notably, he met with the Tribal Chief to convince the Chief that girls should be allowed to attend school instead of being forced to grind corn, an inspiring story! Come and hear about it!  …
